The Green.Building.Solutions. summer university Vienna deals with the building standard of the future already today and offers an introduction and outlook of sustainable and energy-efficient architecture as well as sustainable urban development and planning while presenting leading examples. Together with a consortium of five austrian universites (University of Technology Vienna, University of Economics Vienna, University of Vienna, Danube University Krems, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna), members of the Austrian Passivhaus Union and the AIT a program was formed that connects the theoretical knowledge and the practical expertise right on site. An overview of green building rating systems, ecological building materials and renewable resources is fundamental to understand buildings over their life-cycle. The integration of renewable energies into building concepts is the key feature of the Passivhaus.
The Green.Building.Solutions. Summer University is designed for international students and professionals with backgrounds in architecture, building and civil engineering and other relevant fields of study. But as we are aiming at a heterogeneous group of people from a variety of backgrounds we highly encourage students from all fields of studies (and all kinds of majors) to apply.
The following key elements of the applications will be taken into account:
motivation and commitment for participation
international experience
knowledge of languages
academic standing
work experience
In terms of a holistic approach the program is divided in three modules, each focusing on one specific topic and lasting for one week:
Module 1 – Green Building Design: gives an overview of green building principles and techniques, as well as embedding green buildings into the topic of sustainable urban development.
Module 2 – Green Energies and Technologies: each day is dedicated to a different assessment categorie, such as architecture and planning, energy efficiency and renewable energy, eco-balance, material and recycling management, health issues and indoor air quality and daylight engineering.
Module 3 – Project Work: in terms of planning goals these assessment categories will be integrated in this module, where a green building shall be designed by participant groups – following the given assessment criteria.
Courses are offered at master level. Teaching language is English. The workload for the summer university are 175 Real Hours (7 ECTS) on sustainable urban development, energy efficient building solutions and Passivhaus design.
The program also has a practical orientation and includes excursions, guided tours and visits of relevant locations like urban construction sites, heating and cooling plants, university laboratories, recycling plants as well as traditional buildings like „Schloss Schönbrunn“ and a lot more.
During the summer course the participants will be accomodated in a passive-house student home from our partner the OeAD-housing office which makes the experience of living in a passive-house even more tangible.
Furthermore we cooperate with several austrian companies and organizations who bear the costs of scholarships for our participants. This will guarantee a reasonable participation fee of only € 490,– for selected students, including accomodation, participation fee and public transport.
For a student grant the application deadline is April 28th 2013. Otherwise you can apply until May 15th 2013.
