Abstract
The Global Development Awards and Medals Competition is an innovative award scheme launched by GDN with generous support from the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan, and other donors. The AMC recognizes excellence in policy-oriented research, supports research capacity development of researchers in developing countries and funds innovative social development projects benefiting marginalized groups in the developing world. Since its inception in 2000, GDN has provided US$3.6 million in research and travel grants to finalists and winners. The winners of the current round will be chosen by an eminent jury at GDN’s 15th Annual Global Development Conference to be held in Accra, Ghana, June 18-20, 2014; an event attended by over 500 practitioners in the field of development where finalists will present their proposals and papers.
The competition accepts applications in three categories:
– Category 1: Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (MIDP)
MIDP is a competitive grant program that provides development practitioners with the opportunity to compete for grants to help scale up their innovative project. The grants are awarded to projects and/or non-governmental organizations that are supporting improved service delivery, in particular, innovative approaches and meet certain set criteria. These projects are not theme based. However, the projects need to contribute to sustainable development.
– Category 2: Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD)
The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) is a competitive research grant program that identifies and funds outstanding research proposals in developing countries and transition economies with high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for addressing development issues in any of the three research sub-themes:
(1) Determinants of growth, industrial and trade policies
(2) Environmental sustainability, management of natural resources and structural transformations
(3) Political, institutional, social and governance transformations.
– Category 3: Medals for Research on Development (Medals)
The Medals for Research on Development (Medals) research grant program identifies and awards completed research papers that have engaged path-breaking approaches in addressing contemporary development issues, in each of the three research sub-themes:
(1) Determinants of growth, industrial and trade policies
(2) Environmental sustainability, management of natural resources and structural transformations
(3) Political, institutional, social and governance transformations.
