JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM and JAPANESE GOVERNMENT ( MONBUKAGAKUSHO: MEXT ) SCHOLARSHIP
Qualifications
Age: Applicants must be born from 1983 April 2 to 1995 April 1.
Academic Background:
Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students (junior or senior) majoring in Japanese language or Japanese culture at the time they come to Japan and must return to their countries and resume their studies at the home institution immediately after finishing the program in Japan.
Those majoring in fields of study other than Japanese language and Japanese culture and who wish to pursue complementary studies in Japanese language and culture should apply for other scholarships, such as the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Short-term Student
Exchange Promotion Program Scholarship.
Language:
A level equal to that of Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N2 is required.
Health:
Applicants should be certified to be healthy by a qualified and recognized physician.
Arrival in Japan:
Scholarship grantees must arrive in Japan on September 30, 2013.
Applicants are required to acquire a “College Student” visa when they come to Japan.
Others:
Those who meet one of the following conditions may NOT apply for Japanese Government ( Monbukagakusho: MEXT ) Scholarship:
a) Those who are applying for this scholarship through another institution in Japan.
b) Those who are applying for this scholarship through a Japanese embassy or consulate.
c) Those who are applying for Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarship.
d) Those who will receive financial support from his/her government or other organizations for their study in
Japan.
e) Those who are military personnel or military civilian employees registered on the active list.
f) Those who are not able to arrive in Japan within the designated date mentioned in the 7).
g) Those who have received a Japanese Government ( Monbukagakusho:MEXT ) scholarship in the past
three years (as of 1 October 2013).
Scholarship Benefits
1) Monthly Allowance: 117,000 yen (as of 2012)
The scholarship will be paid to each grantee from October 2013 to August 2014. However it will be stopped in case the receiver is absent from the university for a long period.
2) Travel allowance: round-trip air ticket to and from Japan (Scholarship grantees must depart from and return to the country of their nationality.)
3) Tuition fees: to be waived
Application Procedure (for Program B and Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT Scholarship)
Applicants must submit the following documents to Kanazawa University through their home institution. All documents must be written in either Japanese or English, or accompanied by a translation in Japanese.
1) Completed application form for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship (Before filling in, please fill it out on both sides of the printing paper. Please fill it out as much as possible in Japanese.)
2) Essay : write in only Japanese (about 800~1000 letters)
3) Photographs (7 clear copies (4.5.3.5cm); upper front figure without a hat; taken within the past 6 months) Nationality and name must be indicated on the reverse side. One of the photographs should be pasted on the application form.
4) Certificate of Enrollment (to be issued by the applicant’s home institution)
5) Certified academic record at the university (In case the academic record is not in a grade scale, in addition to the academic record, please submit a record of evaluation in a 100 point scale. Also, please put a check(.) next to the subjects concerning Japanese and Japanese culture.)
6) Recommendation from the university president or dean of the applicant’s home institution addressed to the President of Kanazawa University (prescribed form.)
7) A copy of the birth certificate or the certificate of citizenship in the applicant’s home country (Please don’t forget to attach a translation in Japanese or English)
8) Pledge (prescribed form)
9) A photocopy of the Certificate of Japanese-Language Proficiency Test and the result sheet (For those who hold the certificate of the test Level 1, 2 or N1, N2 only)
10) Medical certificate on the prescribed form
11) A photocopy of the passport (if unavailable at this time, please send it as soon as possible)

Notes
1) Applications will not be accepted if any of the above documents are incomplete, incorrect or not supported by evidence. They also will not be accepted if they arrive after the deadline. In case it is difficult to meet the deadline, please email or fax the applications first before the deadline, and send the original documents by express mail later.
2) The documents submitted will not be returned.
3) The payment of scholarship may be terminated and admission can be cancelled;
a) If any of the information supplied with an application is found to be false later.
b) If scholarship grantee violates the pledge (above 3-8).
c) If scholarship grantee has been subjected to a disciplinary punishment or has been judged by the
faculty as not being able to continue the program.
d) If the college student visa is changed to another status of residence.
4) The scholarship will be stopped in case a grantee is long absent from the university.
5) In 2012, 16 out of 24 students who applied for the scholarship through Kanazawa University were selected to receive the scholarship.
