General background of Akita international university : We are currently hosting a total of over 180 exchange and study abroad students from 28 countries and regions in our Fall Semester 2013. We are pleased that the number of exchange and study abroad students hit a record high in this semester. We continue to create and sustain a truly international campus where cultures meet and interact.In addition AIU’s the uniqueness in Japan for offering an International Liberal Arts education entirely in English, we offer over 250 programs throughout the year focusing on traditional culture in Akita and in Japan so that international students can further their understanding of this county. Before you apply, please know that all applicants who wish to study at Akita International University for one or two semesters, as exchange/non degree-seeking students, must meet the following requirements:

Enrollment Status

Applicants must be enrolled at their home university / college both at the time of application and during their stay at Akita International University, and have completed at least two semesters of studies at the time of application.

GPA

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.50 or higher.

English Proficiency

All students for whom English is a second or other language and who wish to study at Akita International University must demonstrate that their English language is at a level which is required by AIU. Acceptable minimum qualifications are shown below.

Acceptable Certificates

International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) 5.0 or above
American Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 500 or above (PBT)61 or above (iBT)
Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) 630 or above

Online Application

After the applicant receives a username and password from the home university, the applicant must access our Online Application System at https://abroad.aiu.ac.jp and complete our Online Application Form.

It is very important that the applicant provide accurate information on the application form because it will be used for the immigration documents, acceptance letter, and AIU registration.

Submission of Required Documents for AIU Admission

Documents listed below must reach AIU by no later than April 1 for Fall Semester Admission, and November 1 forSpring Semester Admission by airmail.

Original documents are required for AIU’s application review. Applications which fail to reach us by the above deadline will not be accepted. Also, we will not process the application if there are any required documents missing.

All documents must be written in English. In case you need to submit a document written in another language, you must attach an English translation.

  • Completed and signed “Online Application Confirmation Sheet”: After you fill out our “Online Application Form” and click “Confirm”, you will be taken to the “Online Application Confirmation Sheet”. Click “Print” to print out this “Online Application Confirmation Sheet”. The “Certification and Consent” page will print automatically with your “Online Application Confirmation Sheet”. Fill out the “Certification and Consent” by hand and attach a passport-size ID photo where indicated. After printing out the Confirmation Sheet, you must click “Submit” to complete your online application.
  • Official Academic Transcript from Home University
  • Personal Statement of Purpose (300 – 500 words)
  • International Student Reference Form(2 pages each): You can download the form here. If you are applying as an exchange student from one of our partner universities,submit ONE International Student Reference Form. If you are applying as a non-exchange (independent fee-paying) student, submit TWO International Student Reference Forms.
  • Proof of English Proficiency (if applicable): Please check the Eligibility to Apply.
  • Two ID Photos(One for AIU admission and another one for visa application): If the photos are not clear, we may request that applicants send additional photos. Please note the following when submitting photos:
    * Photos must be passport-size (3 cm x 4 cm) and clearly show your head and shoulders.
    * A personal snapshot is not acceptable; this must be an official ID photo.
    * Photos in which you are wearing sunglasses and/or a cap/hat are not acceptable.
    * Photos which are printed on a color printer are not acceptable.
