Amount

Up to three grants are available. Length of grant is four months or 10 months. One-semester grants may begin in September 2014 or February 2015; two-semester grants must begin in September 2014.

Country benefits include… more » the following:
1. Base Stipend/Maintenance: For 2012-13, the following was provided: $1,870- $2,860 monthly base stipend, based on the following criteria:
– Assistant Professor or professional equivalent: $2,640 per month
– Associate/Full Professor or professional equivalent: $2,860 per month

For 2014-2015, for scholars on teaching or teaching/research grants, if the combined amount of the stipend and subsistence allowance for the grant period is less than the amount of the grantee’s salary (excluding summer teaching, merit awards, consulting fees, etc.) for a comparable period, then the grantee will receive a salary supplement stipend to bring the amount to the same level as the individual’s salary for a comparable period, but the amount may not exceed $10,000 per full grant month. This benefit applies only to earned salary as defined above and does not include royalties or other similar types of income.

2. Subsistence: For 2012-13, the following was provided: $650-$850 per month based on the number of accompanying dependents, up to two accompanying dependents.

3. Housing: For 2012-13, the following was provided: Housing allowance of $1,000 per month. The Public Affairs Section will assist in locating appropriate housing.

4. Travel Relocation: For 2011-12, the following was provided: Travel allowance of $2,750 for travel from USA to host country. Dependents Travel: $2,750 for one dependent; $5,500 for up to two dependents. Relocation Allowance: $750. Transit Fees and Excess Baggage: $500.

5. Book Allowance: $1,000 per semester for books and educational materials to be donated to the host institution (or other entity) upon grantee’s departure.

6. Dependent Tuition Allowance: Up to $7,500 per child per semester for accompanying dependents in grades K-12, upon submission of receipts. Maximum of $30,000 per family for a 10-month grant. Reimbursement is based on actual cost of tuition and fees only. International schooling available only in Ulaanbaatar. Local kindergartens are likely sufficient for very young children.

7. Other Award Allowances: Grantees can also be reimbursed for language study up to $500 upon submission of receipts.

Dependents must accompany grantee for at least 80 percent of grant period to qualify for housing, subsistence, and travel allowances.

Abstract

This grant is for teaching or teaching/research at any appropriate institution including, for example, National University of Mongolia, Health Sciences University of Mongolia, Mongolian University of Science and… more » Technology, Mongolian State University of Agriculture, Mongolian University of Humanities, and Institute of Finance and Economics. The grantee will teach undergraduate courses in area of specialization. May also be asked to assist the host institution with curriculum and program development and/or supervise graduate student research projects. Fulbright Scholars will be encouraged to give seminars, workshops and public presentations outside their host institution. For Teaching/Research grants, research should make up no more than 20 percent of grant activities.

Applications are sought in all appropriate disciplines. Applications in all appropriate disciplines will be considered. Experts in the following disciplines are particularly needed in Mongolia: education, biology, environmental science, economics, journalism, law, political science and business administration. Within these disciplines, the following specializations and subject areas are particularly desired: early childhood education, English education (and American Studies), special education, environmental economics, sustainable development, nano-technology, mining, arts management, cultural preservation and marketing. Higher education courses taught in English are particularly needed because many current professors were educated during the socialist era and have only studied Russian.

Eligibility

Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree such as M.F.A., J.D., or M.D.) not required. This award category is open to academics and appropriately qualified professionals outside of academia. Applicants should have at least… more » two years of university teaching experience or the professional equivalent. Those holding associate or full professor rank are preferred, but assistant professors will also be considered. Professionals should have university teaching experience. All teaching will be in English; proficiency in Mongolian or Russian is not required. Some knowledge of Mongolian or Russian is advantageous and would be useful for everyday living. Invitation letter is optional. The Public Affairs Section will assist in placement at an appropriate academic institution after applicant is selected for the program.

Applicants are considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin and/or physical impairment. Applicants must have U.S. citizenship – permanent residence is not sufficient. Applicants must have sound physical and mental health. Grantees are required to submit a Medical History and Examination Report before their grants can be finalized. The lifetime maximum number of Fulbright Scholar grants is two. That may be calculated either as one traditional grant and two senior specialist grants, or two traditional grants.

Candidates who have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in a six-year period preceding the date of application are ineligible. In this case, a period of nine months or more during a calendar year is considered to constitute a full year abroad.

Candidates should be aware of the Review Criteria regarding Previous Experiences Abroad and Previous Fulbright Grants.

Applicants are required to disclose any prior convictions of a felony or a misdemeanor (excluding minor traffic violations). The complete JWFFSB regulations can be found under Ineligibility Factors.

Employees, spouses and dependent children of the United States Department of State or public and private organizations under contract to the Department of State are ineligible to apply for a Fulbright grant until one year after employment termination.
