For the 10th edition of “UB Impulse: Expert talks on Quality Growth,” the School of International Relations and Public Administration (SIRPA), the National University of Mongolia (NUM) and the Integrated Mineral Resource Initiative (IMRI) of the GIZ welcomed Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. James A. Robinson. This public lecture and discussion on the topic of “Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty” was held on Wednesday, May 10th, 2016, from 14:00 until 16:30 at the Lecture Hall of 6th floor of NUM Building V. The event started with inaugural remarks by Prof. Dr. Burmaa N, Head of Public Administration, SIRPA, NUM, Prof. Dr. Narantuya Ch, Vice Director of NUM, Dr Christian Glass, First Secretary of Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany, and Dr. Dr. h. c. Stefan Hanselmann, Director of GIZ IMRI. The subsequent lecture given by Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. James A. Robinson highlighted the importance of promoting incentives and opportunities in society. He further discussed how political and economic institutions influence on nation’s failure or success. The lecture was followed by an open discussion session, hosted by economist and columnist Jargalsaikhan D (DeFacto). The audience expressed mixed opinions about the effect of major institutions and their influences on further development of Mongolia.
Over 250 people participated in this event which consisted of Professors and lecturers of the Schools of NUM, Law Enforcement University, Mongolian University of Science and Technology, Mongolian International University, Institute of Finance and Economics, Otgontenger University, and officials and representatives from the Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany to Mongolia, Embassy of Czech Republic in Ulaanbaatar, GIZ, Konrad–Adenauer-Stiftung Mongolia, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, United Nations offices in Mongolia, World Health Organization in Mongolia, JICA, KOICA, Asian Development Bank, ADRA, World Bank, Mercy Corps, Etugen University, and officers from Ministry of Mining, Governor’s office of Ulaanbaatar city, Mongolian Academy of Science, Agency of Anti Corruption, Civil Service Council of Mongolia, General Archival Authority, Bayanzurkh district and other government agencies. Furthermore, there were many representatives from private entities and non-government organizations. The closing remarks of the event were addressed by Prof. Dr. Battulga S, Director of SIRPA and Dr. Dr. h. c. Stefan Hanselmann, Director of GIZ IMRI.
